I used in home tutorials. I watched some youtube videos on the subject i needed at the time. I got the basic idea and practiced on my wardrobe. You will fuck up a lot in the beginning if you dont have a mentor so i would suggest you alter 3 or 4 shirts/jeans you dont use just to get the hang of it. Before altering try to practice on the same material before hand. Either cut off a piece of the garment itself, or find something simliar.

A very good book to get (torrent it) is "Singer Complete photo guide to sewing." It lays a lot of the basics for you.
