Yeah, the Guzmania and Vrisea hybrids you normally get can look kinda fake, and those take forever until they flower again, but they're nice plants still.
See if you can get some Achmea or Billbergia (pic related), those look a bit more normal, I'd say.
Or Neoregalia, but those are hard to find, since they tend not to have fancy flowers, so you won't find them in normal shops.
