Well, the skulls made a lot more sense in context, but the general idea was to replace traditional repeats (e.g. paisley, polka dots [which is already a CdG signature], plaids, checks, etc.) with the skulls and then to tweak them by reversing them, adding elements, using them as cut-and-sewn panel details, etc.
