I feel for courbet too, but I feel like the realists, from a contemporary perspective, lose significance. I mean, photos of everyday people were revolutionary in their time, but I would say it wasn't as much of a revolution in how we perceive "painting", compared to, say, the fauvists.

Don't get me wrong, I fucking love courbet. But I admire the total upending of the medium caused by people like Matisse and Kirchner and Kandinsky.
