After a lifetime of buzzcuts I've grown my hair out to about 8 inches. I like the long hair look and want to keep going,

The only thing is I havne't had a haircut and I feel like my hair is just starting to look like a mop. I want to get it cut but I have no idea to what, could I go into a barbershop and just ask them to do whatever they want as long as it stays long?

And how much should I expect to pay for a good cut? I'm in nyc if anyone has any suggestion
