maybe its because the nhs here has most people covered but I don't understand why anyone with an ED would ever pay to go to some fancy private inpatient. even if they really wanted to get better.

It can. You need to be restricting significantly for at least a week, so most people's fasts don't last that long, and again its rare for it to be fatal so I'm sure a lot of people that have experienced it just feel really shitty for a couple days and don't really know what's happening to them.
