A moonphase is just a kind of cool complication to add to a watch face. It's pretty, it's not TOTALLY useless (maybe you're an amateur astronomer wanting to do some lunar observation. You can approximately know when the moon will rise or set by the phase indicated). You can also add things like maybe have a monthly calendar going around it. I'm probably biased because I do astronomy, so it ties two hobbies together.
