In Neuromancer, Gibson describes a tribe of Zionist Rastafarians who live in a small orbital cluster of their own making and grow pot for fun & profit. The whole zion Cluster also pumps out sample-based music (and keep in mind this was written in 1981):

So to answer your question, I think a lot of things could fall under the field of viable, it's more about the mindset with which you consume the music, if that makes any sense.
