what size sweater should I order? I'm a slim 36" and I don't know if i should buy a 34 and try to stretch it to fit or get a 38 and either try shrinking it or just live with the looser fit.

Not a fan of Levi's?
I got two pairs of black jeans from them. My 527's are great for comfort, fit, durability and maintaining a solid black color whereas my 513's feel more like canvas and get dirty very easily.
