Generally, bezels are used to mark time. Typically elapsed time or countdown for anything you can think of. The best application is for scuba diving, to mark the elapsed time of the remaining oxygen supply. When a diver wears a watch such as this, with a rotating bezel, they move the marker at the twelve position to a certain time around the dial. While the diver is underwater he can see when the hand reaches that point on the bezel he will be out of air and he needs to float up.

The bezels found on chronographs are usually tachymeters. Take a look at the Seiko Pepsi. Tachymeter is used to compute speed based on travel time over a fixed distance travelled. The tachymeter bezel or dial is a logarithmic scale that simplifies the computation of speed of an object. Use this formula:

Tachymeter Dial = 3600 / Elapsed Time In Seconds

Although the Orient Mako isn't ISO rated, it is still a very capable diver. I just wouldn't take it 200m below sea level. For easy 30 to 40 meter dives, it does the job well. For snorkeling and other watersports, this thing will do the job well. The Pepsi model is by far the best.
