It's fairly common for people to confuse open comedones ("blackheads") with sebaceous filaments. The stuff in the green area is predominantly sebaceous filaments, while there are some blackheads in other places (marked blue). This is before/after a layman OCM treatment.

Sebaceous filaments (mostly just fat + skin residues covering a strand of hair) are in general much softer (and lighter) than blackheads. They can rather easily be squeezed out of the pilosebaceous ducts. After extraction, sebaceous filaments will reform after a couple of weeks. They can be a bit irritating. Certain keratolytic substances will make them a bit less visible, as well as OCM (as seen in the pic). Salicylic acid should work better, from a solubility perspective, than common AHAs like glycolic acid or lactic acid.
