The Faustian western spirit is a Spenglerian concept that implies that Western culture is always searching for a greater spiritual/mental state, even at its own detriment. Like the legend of Dr. Faust.
It's ironic that a culture that was always looking for higher spiritual concepts would get so caught up in animal concepts like Sex and food. Faustian ideals are all about sacrificing yourself for the greater good, not the greater pleasure.
