Black jeans might be versatile for casualwear but try researching other styles. I like pleated stuff—highly practical (i.e easier to sit, more pocket space, draws eye better) and I guess it's a classic look. I already have a sort of professor/literary vibe so it fits. Pic related is perfect.
You can also try relaxed or wide fits, perhaps cuffed once or twice if they flop around your ankles too much. Wear a belt and tuck your top in for extra proportion points

Mid to high-waisted trousers have been standard for literally all of history until some fags in the 90s decided it would be a good idea to reduce groin space to the point of masochism. And I don't see anyone wearing high-waisted trousers with the same intent as a neckbeard wearing a fedora. It's just pants—a wardrobe staple at that, not a superfluous accessory like a dumb hat that was popular 70 years ago
