Two reasons why they get a bad rap:

1. Association: whether by truth or meme, they're associated with people that don't dress well. You tend to see em on either guys who wear flame print silk short sleeve buttoned shirts, or guys who's entire closet consists of tanks from last summer's Zumie's sale.

2. Profile: they inherently add thickness to your profile by both shape and contrast of the stitching over a flat surface (your thigh) which makes the upper leg look significantly thicker than the calf area. Additionally, most all of them end at or below the knee, which only adds to the profile problem.

I wear them while hiking or climbing because having the pockets comes in handy there. If you feel that you need that many pockets in your day to day, you need to reevaluate the shit you carry around. To me, wearing these outside of necessity is like wearing locking bike shoes to walk around town i.e. Retarded
