Oh, yeah, that movie was absolutely retarded in terms of gender roles. Beyond retarded. Living proof of why the Hippie sexual revolution failed the way it did. Trying to bring about a sea change in gender relations when you still basically think of women the way they're portrayed in that film? Pfffft.

On the other hand, you can read the narrative as uber-feminist. By the end of the film she's able to return to her mother Earth without any man by her side. I think the final shot of her alone staring at earth from afar is a metaphor for self-empowerment in the wake of the failed sexual revolution (represented by Keitel, his pills and loose ethics) and the old-guard patriarchy (A nurturing Kirk Douglas who still makes all her decisions for her with little consultation).
Neither the gentle older fellow nor the dangerous bad boy are a part of her story in the end - she is her own woman.
