Rolex is the first leg of "that's too expensive for a watch"

Basically anything up to an Omega priced watch is reasonable for a regular person, but Rolex kind of acts as the gateway into the "luxury" watch world, so when you look at Rolex designs that seem relatively simple and involve fairly mundane materials (steel watch, no crazy dials, chronos, etc) then hear what a new one costs at MSRP or on the secondary market the immediate reaction becomes

The difference is Rolex is the most well known luxury brand, so it's the one that gets this reaction the most. Regular people don't even know what AP, Patek, JLC, VC, etc are most of the time so they don't even really register if they see somebody wearing one.
