I don't think that's it at all. A lot of masculinity is about time/effort. For example peak male physique requires thousands of hours at the gym.

That's the result of western society's division of men as earners, and women as spenders. You don't see the same division in 3rd world non-western countries. Especially those with less westernization.

It's unarguable that in any situation women have more choices than men. Men and women are both told to conform, but since there has been less evolution in mens it seems like by comparison women are giving more freedom. Yes, they have a bigger prison to run around in, but western gender roles constrain us all.
