oil WILL darken them no doubt. mine are darker than they ever were. just wear them for 6 months and the high stress areas will return to a lighter color creating dope ass contrast. heres a pic of mine.

i got copper, i think its actually a better choice than amber. as it ages (and you oil it) the leather darkens in areas of little movement, and creates a higher contrast with areas of high movement. heres a pic of mine after a polish, you can really pull out the warm hues in the highlights if properly clean/oil/condition them.
