in terms of quality, what is it about truly good watches that makes them so good? I mean, at $300 and beyond.

I see a ton of nasty 'designer' watches (Guess, Fossil, Diesel, Jag etc) at department stores. why are they as bad as they are? is a quartz movement always bad?

what do you look for when you handle a watch? I'm gonna be prowling some second hand stores & I want to be able to distinguish a good watch when I see it.
