I'd say I take a middle ground on this issue. Clothes that would be worn in combat 1970s-onward would clash, because combat gear from then on has been so drastically different from normal clothing. Earlier than that could possibly work, depending on the item. There are a lot of WWII items that can work with TIP clothes while still having more of an obviously military appearance than older heritage items like trench coats.
