Boys (specifically boys) in school had a limited number of acceptable casual styles off the rack. Now they don't know what else to do but buy more expensive variations of the same aesthetic. They (mostly) don't have the creativity or courage to experiment, whereas hypebeast shit requires neither but still carries status. Extreme prices and limited production brings a sense of exclusivity and individuality, while celebrity endorsement and groupthink keeps the clothing risk-free.

Most young men are not hypebeasts, but the basic streetwear style is easy to throw together and doesn't stand out in a casual setting. The twenty something who spent over a thousand dollars on a basic t-shirt, hoodie, and sneakers will get way less shit from his peers than the one who wears a well-tailored casual suit.
