You fucking fags should do more research before posting. The Dark Academia aesthetic was popularised by The Secret History by Donna Tarth and got a resurgence when The Goldfinch was published and other TSH copy cats started to get published.
It's heavily inspired by the WASP lifestyle (see Dead Poets Society >>14631443 for example) that Tarth experienced in the '80s.
One thing that no one mentioned in this thread is that Dark Academia often deals with the theme of Death and Mortality like in The Secret History. Ence the Dark.
The problem is that with the mainstreamzation of the DA aesthetic, came with these this Instagram thots trying to associate with Harry Potter, without knowing its origins.
It's pretentious yes, but WASPs, in general, are pretentious.
