You can't truly progress any field if you don't build on what came before. In architecture it's no different, architecture that never changes is boring.
In the 21st century we don't need servant quarters, larders etc. The buildings need to meet the needs of today and the future. But this doesn't mean forgetting the past or the essentials of what makes a beautiful building.
If you design for pure utility your buildings will eventually becomes useless. Because nobody likes being in ugly buildings.
