part of the reason he played the cheaper Japanese models was because he destroyed them during the shows. Fender kept sending them to him because it was high profile marketing for them

also once enough gain is added to the signal, the type of guitar hardly matters anymore and you can't as easily distinguish what make/model the guitar was
