You're right, for the world to function we need all kind of people. Designers, fishermen, even 4chan janitors. The fact is what you're doing isn't particulary technical, and as such doesn't require academic excellence. So rankings matter even less in your case.
Don't get me wrong, design is cool but saying that your school is top 5 in design isn't saying much since there isn't a common ground to compare schools. Design uses the scientific advancements such as improvement in welding (plasma research), material, dynamics etc. Those are actual improvements that can be quantified, design is abstract
