Considering Rolex wasn't even calling any of their watches Explorers until after 1953 after the first climb to the top of Mt. Everest, and WW2 had already been over for 8 years by then, I think it's safe to say the air plane instruments came first.

This is what the equivalent to the "explorer" looked like in the 50s. They didn't release a watch actually called Explorer resembling what we recognize as the explorer today until 1963
