watches can be defined into 2 major categories
A)quartz
A battery powers the watch and a quartz crystal inside it which regulates the time
-Solar
the battery is rechargable and powered by light, removing the need for battery replacement

B)mechanical
A mainspring powers the watch. The time is regulated by complex system of little gears and sprockets and springs
-Automatic
the mainspring is wound by regular movement using a rotor (being worn on the wrist, shaken, kept in an auto winder)
-Handwound
the mainspring is wound by hand via the crown.
Many mechanical watches are both automatic and handwound.

there are some hybrids and overlaps, like quartz kinetic watches (like a mechanical automatic but with quartz), seiko springdrive. There is also stuff like the bulova accutron (regulated by a tuning fork) or water powered quartz (powered by electric current in water and not a battery)
