What do if you have very thick, heavy, mostly straight (a little wavy if it grows out) hair?

I always wished that I had lighter, messier hair, but it is what it is.

I'm growing it out because I don't know what the hell to do with it, and it is currently approaching shoulder length in the back and chin length everywhere else.
