They basically saved it by making watches a luxury product and quartz became cheaper and could be mass-produced shit, but there are some advanced quartz movements that cost a lot, mostly from Japan.

Because it's an analogue little machine, indeed inferior to quartz in terms of accuracy, but can take long time and require a lot of skill to build and finish to the highest standards. It's more a preservation and appreciation of an art form and one of our most important technological achievements.
