on the contrary I think the normalfag is unique to this generation. the nature of the normalfag existed in small doses in the past but here they've come full front.

I study normalfags very closely and I've come close to unlocking the key of their existence: memetics.

normies are very much defined by the memes that surround them. their conversation, lifestyle, interests, habits. not simply social memes, but also a high presence of commercial memes as well. In the past, advertising and political propaganda wasn't so effective to narrowly define livelihoods in favor of passed down, complex, organic, mulitlayered social cultures.

you might have been restricted to certain social expectations, but your personality, interests, taste were open-ended within reasonability. I think around the late 80s, early 90s, marketing advanced forward, but this was responded with an inherent criticality. brands were approached with irony, consumerism was detested, individuality was promoted.

but these were co-opted. 'being an individual' is now just another meme that's inherently anti-individual. consumerism is accelerated ironically, etc.

what I mean is, consider a normalfag today getting into any interest, to pick some random: motorcycles. they won't simply get into motorcycles. they'll buy themselves into it, and commit themselves to all the signs of the target niche.

same can be said of streetwear, "punks", hipsters, yuppies, etc.

no criticality, no conscious engagement. it's commitment to a tribe. pure signalling.
