Ok, lets take an example. Say you want a seamaster. Omega is one of the brands that is faked somewhat often. To find out what tends to get faked, look for a community like the replica watch subreddit and you'll see what they discuss. For example, rolex, panerai, and cartier are top candidates for fakes.

Lets say you found a seamaster you like on a place like chrono24. That can be safe if the seller is considered reputable, although it is still possible they have their hands on a fake. Lets say you see a good deal on a private seller that hasn't done much.

Look in the rep communities for reps of the specific model you have. For an omega it might look something like 233.30.41.21.01.001 and for a Panerai it might look like PAM 1110 or something. If you can't find your specific watch, you're probably safe. If you do find reps, then what you do is look for posts of people asking if their fake is close enough, and they will actually point out what is wrong. You can then use those details and try to look at the listing. Or even compare with a rep seller. If you can't tell, ask the seller for better pics. If they won't do it, then don't take the chance. I only know all this because I wanted to buy a Cartier Santos and got really paranoid. Haven't been able to use it to actually buy something yet.

It's an appeal to tradition that warps the perception of watchfags due to swiss marketing, even archeologists who love old shit prefer the condition to be as close to mint as possible. I still kind of like pale yellow lume, though.
