this is pretty frustrating to read, tripsk. sounds like a lot of yr information is second- or thirdhand (and i saw yr earlier post about yr friend.) i want to ask you: wheres yr idea of "what feminism's come to represent" coming from? is it from individuals who would identify as feminist or is it from their opponents?

ill put all my stake in the fact that u'll be hard-pressed find a feminist who will tell u that they legitimately believe women should enjoy privilege over men. the more radical a movement gets, the easier it is for its opposition to marginalize and demonize its members and ideologies esp in the minds of the moderate or undecided. its important to recognize that so much of the media, academia, politics, etc. remain themselves firmly rooted in patriarchal institutions and the information u might glean from them -- like what the feminist movement "represents" -- comes from a patriarchal perspective, or is motivated by it. but thats a difficult idea to uncover if yr only sources of information on the topic r what yr friend does or what people on airplanes think.

i would really encourage u to do some reading. bell hook's works break down both the rhetoric and realities of being a feminist into smth readable and not so radical. yr placing arbitrary limitations on what feminism is or can be but u also seem a little unwilling to make any move to get rid of the limits uve placed on yr own understanding -- thats whats frustrating.
