Aren't these "gimmicks" the reason we're attracted to these time keeping pieces in the first place, those unnecessary (in the context of current and slightly less current times) complications? Those little cogs, springs, jewels, crystals, batteries and whatever the fuck combination they're placed in? Le spring drive keeps better time than any mechanical, and a battery powered shitter you can acquire for basically chump change keeps better time than all them. And then there's the fucking phone, where timekeeping is basically an afterthought. It's not that functionality we're after when going after these pieces. They're the toys for grown-ups and I don't know about you, but I loved my fucking toys as a kid, and I sure as hell love the ones I got now. Automatics, manuals, quartz, spring drives, it's all fucking semantics. "Le spring drive is a quartz!" Why is spring drive being a quartz a bad thing? Is it because "quartz = cheap"? It's still a magnificent piece of engineering, same as those solar-powered, radio-synced digital watches, same as any regular or more outlandish mechanicals. I wanna get a spring drive. I think it's an interesting spin on what quartz watch is supposed to be, and you can be damn sure it's not reason that's driving me to get it. It's pure fucking autism and I love every smooth/skipped/lost/precise second of it.
