If he really knew his shit he'd also know that there are plenty of gimmicks and divergent approaches in black metal, to the point where it's silly to get hung up on the copycat bands when there's already enough variety to sustain you for years on end, and that if you aren't looking for variety, the copycats are there for you.

It is definitely true that 90% of BM bands are copies of better bands, but it's not a dirty secret or anything to hold against BM. Even Euronymous and the other 2nd wave autists weren't pretending to be trailblazing innovators, they were just doing their best to recreate the sound they liked in previous bands, and maybe put their own little spin on it if they felt the need to.
