Personally, I think it should be openable, for at least access to a quick and painless death, because dying slowly from asphyxiation/starvation/dehydration is far worse than dying from pressure. I remember from the Piccard entries that despite hearing portholes crack, they know what's going to kill them is the one that they don't get to see or hear so at least the deaths were going to be painless since it was going to be instantaneous, can't say the same for the three I mentioned prior.

That said, Piccard and co. doing this shit in the 1950s, those fuckers had nerves of steel.
