original response went over the character limit so i'll just talk about ito.

this is one of the first pages of tomie. in the first panel, you have this solid black shadow on the inner corner of the guy's eye and no shadow anywhere else. one side of his suit is crosshatched and the other is just parallel hatched. one eye is more thickly lined than the other. this isn't intentional stylization to efficiently convey information, just a lot of inconsistency.

and it’s great! ito’s current work is really tightly lined and consistent looking. the consistency puts the focus on -what- he’s conveying, not -how- he’s conveying it. you don’t stop considering the spooky ghost girl story to be like “wtf why is there a shadow on his face there and nowhere else”. this is good if what you’re looking for is “immersion” in a story. but i’m interested in the -how- more than the -what-. the information ito’s conveying in this page is secondary to the fact that this is art created by another human being.

you could use a convolution neural network to render a photo in the style of a modern ito page. i think the result would look fairly close to what ito himself would draw if tasked to draw the photo in his style. if you repeated the process with a younger ito, you would end up with two vastly different-looking pictures. the “rules” for making an image (what line thickness to use, which screentones to use, where to place shadows) can be easily surmised from the logically stylized, self-consistent modern ito illustrations. but who could predict the unexpected face shadow? it’s bizarre, unique, surprising. it has hella character and charm. it makes you think; wow, there are ways of interpreting the world which would never have occurred to me alone. wow, this weird art gives me a perspective i’d be hard-pressed to find anywhere else.
