As a 6.5 inch wristlet, I find that the 44mm MDV-106 just barely makes the cut, and most of the more affordable Nomos watches still fit despite how ridiculous the lugs look. So unless you're cursed, you'll be fine. I still recommend finding an AD somewhere just to see GS in person, because some people are either even more impressed in person, or find out that there's something they don't like.

Timex weekender is what gets pushed by fashion magazines as the cheapest, versatile watch. Compared to a diver it really is versatile, you can use it for almost every situation. The ticking is damn loud, though.
Vostok is a quirky russian shitter with tons of little features most dive watches don't have. Emphasis on quirky, some things about the watch just suck. People love to mod it and make all sorts of cool things out of it, but that might not be for you.
Casio MDV106 looks really good for what it is, and is also probably the cheapest.
