I actually don't know much about Thom Browne at all.

However I do know that like CDG, there are Thom Browne collectors who buy those pieces you consider 'unwearable' simply because they are so beautiful, exotic and glamorous.

I guess to address why he didn't d both from the beginning...Well I don't know, everyone has their own unique discourse and that is something I can demonstrate.

Helmut Lang spent his earliest days in dress making as a MtM tailor in a small shop in Vienna. I don't know why, maybe to improve his craft on a technical level and familiarise himself with the current market. Perhaps it gave him a good indication of where the world was and where he should begin his journey as a designer.

Carol Christian Poell not dissimilar in that he spent his early career (can't remember where) but as effectively a traditional tailor making contemporary suiting. Then one day he started making things for aquatic humanoids and mutilated corpses.

So I guess what I'm saying here is everyone starts from their own unique environments and looks to do use the resources available to them at that time to produce what they think is valuable at that moment. Then maybe at some point they decide that they done enough of that/achieved what they wanted and have found a totally new environment for themselves to craft a whole different universe.

I can safely assume (knowing nothing of Thom's earlier career) that maybe he also started out just refining his worksmanship as a tailor, making well made garments for people that could afford it. Then one day he decided he had progressed enough to where he could design garments based on stardusted satyrs dancing around roman gardens to psychedelic tunes.
