Smelling the difference now isn't the reason to encode buy Eau de Parfum. Eau de Parfum uses lossless scent mixing, while Eau de Toilette is 'lossy'. What this means is that for each year the EDT sits in your drawer, it will lose roughly 12ml per liter, assuming you have a full bottle - it's about 15ml per liter on samples, but only 7 ml per liter on attars, due to rotational velocidensity. You don't want to know how much worse it is with Eau de Cologne or other outdated concentrations.

I started collecting EDTs in about 2001, and if I try to spray any of the bottles I bought back then, even the stuff I grabbed at 100ml, they just smell like crap. The base notes are terrible, the heart…well don’t get me started. Some of those scents have degraded down to 32 or even 16 ml per liter. Eau de Parfums from the same period still smell great, even if they weren’t applied correctly by rubbing on wrists. Seriously, stick to EDP, you may not be able to smell the difference now, but in a year or two, you’ll be glad you did.
