I would argue almost every luxury watch is overpriced and coasting on name brand faggotry. There’s no real value proposition when looking at inherently irrational items like luxury watches. In my opinion people buy Rolex, Cartier or Panerai for iconic and recognizable designs first and foremost with a guaranteed level of quality second. I don’t view it as a real knock against any of those brands, it’s just inherent in the industry. AP and Patek certainly suffer from the same thing, but since they’re significantly more expensive and offer a better product all around they don’t catch as much flak for it.

The only way to get around the fake problem is to create some insanely autistic movement that is ridiculously hard to fake. Even then I have no doubt the Chinese would figure it out eventually but perhaps the cost and labor would be so high as to make it not viable to mass produce them. I don’t know if there are any Freak replicas around - I’m sure there are, but I’d be really impressed if they worked.
