I don't agree that it's skewed, but I think /fa/ does have a heightened concern about getting laughed at and stuff like you say.

I carry that with me all the time and i'm not certain it's a bad thing because it can mean the difference between getting a job or not or something like that.

If some kid is wearing red leather pants and a blue blazer i'm going to think things about him. I'm not ashamed to admit. I would also expect him to think certain things about me if I were in the same fit.

not to say I wouldn't talk to him and find out his personality also, if there was a reason to, but I may try to help him see that toning it down could be a nice thing to do as well.
