I checked White's website thoroughly.
They never explain what's new or why it's cheaper.

But the promo shots of a guy wearing the double shot model show some really ugly creasing. I thought double shot it a superior version of CXL.

What the fuck

On new shoes I usually apply a layer of renovateur and wax straight out of the box for protection (since god knows how long it's been since that piece of leather was made)
It never really sticks the first time, I wear them a couple of times and then reapply. It also gets rid of scuffs etc. The second time the wax really makes a layer and that seems to protect against most things.
