i think it's worth growing out. box braids aren't ratchet, deprogram your internalized racisim.

if you big chop, you can get a weave or wear a wig.
if i were you, i'd transitiona bit, then do a "big chop" but you'll have more unprocessed hair, so you'll be shorthaired, not bald.
