I absolutely read the blobby factor you're getting at here and I think it's one of the aspects that we end up seeing less in vehicles that have adopted a lot of the design language he pioneered. It's interesting because I think if you imagined a couple of sliders, one for this bloat and one for "flame surfacing", you need the bloat in the design first to really make the flame surfacing shine, but the more you turn up the flame surfacing and dynamics, the less the underlying bloat is evident.

The earlier e65 was by far the most bloat-ey and least flame-ey of the Bangle era designs, and I'd agree it's the least popular and eye catching.

I think there's also another angle where executives and the automotive press were genuinely scared of concave surfaces in design, and maybe these earlier works tended to play up the convex surfaces in order to appease this search for traditionally muscular forms. The result in the new design language is that it's a bit blobby though absolutely.
