in the past most watch cases were made out of shitty steel, sometimes not even steel, but some nickel/brass alloy nonsense that were vulnerable to sweat corrosion. This was due to cost, poorer technology or out of necessity (war time). A bund strap prevents this by having the leather there so the watch isnt constantly sitting in sweats and oils.

dont get plated brass, its costume jewelery. The coating will flake and tarnish and corrode
get at least sterling silver which can be polished
