There's so much to appearance that is interesting, has depth, and is even wholesome. People think of fashion as trends and showing off, basically an excuse to be self-involved and pompous, but it needn't be that. It's a way to take the inside out. Clothes create emotions, which creates a perception and an expectation. Even the most thick-skulled conservative person can admit that if you ask them something like "what's the point of uniforms." It's a chance to do two things: make your outward appearance mirror your inward affect, and to correct for any unfairness biology or society has given you. Getting an outfit just right so that it polishes your flaws and signals who you are in a way that people cannot deny is magnetic? There's something very life affirming about it. If I'm going to be douchey, it's a little bit of what heaven must be like.
