All of us have an opportunity to develop a vision, a personal style. Style lies dormant within all of us, and all art is the promulgation of one such vision. Different styles catch on at different rates, and some styles are suited to their time and place better than others. Clever artists and designers hitch their wagon to the collective cultural unconscious at just the right moment and they see their fortunes rise.
Kurt was in the right place at the right time, check out the docu Hype! and you'll see what I mean. I think we can thank the media for his meteoric rise as much as we can his brilliant vision and innate talent.
He was still a great artist, he still had acres of drive and vision, but he was in the right place at the right time. I don't think he ever chose to be a figurehead, he kind of had it all foisted upon him.
