minor hairline scratches can be polished away with regular toothpaste (just like for car headlights)

heavier ones require polywatch (the "proper" way), but autosol metal polish works just as well and is way cheaper, a big tube is like $2. (tried it myself on a old vostok)

Checking the results of the polishing both visually, and under a 10x microscope, no discernable difference was noticeable on either half of the test crystal.
