it was just washed after being assembled, but they selected a nice, oily hide for it, which you won't find at tandy; and, while stitching leather like that is pretty straightforward, he'll need some practice to get it so tight and professional. the hardware selection will be difficult to replicate too.

i'm not usually a big fan of boris, although he had some early stuff that was really thoughtful, he or whoever is doing his patterning lets me done sometimes, it's frequently just gratuitous.

an aside, speaking of hardware, someone was telling me about the d ring from a pair of poell oxfords selling for like $300. they're nice apparently, forged specifically for carol's work and engraved with his logo, and it sold to someone who bought a second hand pair sans d ring, but it's still hilarious.
