William Gibson's sprawl trilogy, various histories of space travel, visits to cape canaveral and LC 39 in my youth, watching that enormous treaded trawler lug the shuttle to its launch site. The entire program embodies, for me, a militarily focused nation evolving a branch of its armed forces into an engine for the sake of science and understanding. The undertaking of humanity's greatest adventure.
